A multimeter is the tool an electrician uses to test whether or not a circuit is faulty, along with a number of other functions such as measuring current and resistance. If you suspect one of your breakers may be faulty, a cheap multimeter might be a worthwhile investment. How Do I Use a Multimeter To Test a Breaker?First, determine which breaker may need replacing. They should usually be labeled in the electrical panel, but you can figure out which breakers control which appliances by trial and error. Once you identify the faulty breaker, you should be turning off anything in the house that is powered by that breaker.
The multimeter should be tuned to the ACV setting to measure the voltage coming through the breaker. One prong of the multimeter should be touched to the breaker’s terminal screw, and the other prong touched to the ground screw.
Once the prongs are properly connected, the readout on the multimeter should display the potential voltage of the breaker you’re testing. If the readout shows zeroes, then the breaker is faulty and needs to be replaced. Should you find yourself in need of a replacement breaker, don’t put yourself at risk.
