Preparing for Power Outages Most of New Jersey has recently been affected by an unexpected storm on Tuesday, July 23rd. With this storm, came power outages across the state and other damages that came from the strong winds, lightning and rain. With this unexpected power outage, leaving many with no power for several days, it is important to take into consideration how you can be prepared for the next storm that heads our way. Listed are some tips you should keep on hand when you know a storm is in the forecast! 1. Keep Food from Spoiling Keep coolers on hand. Small Styrofoam coolers are perfect to be able to fit in the fridge to keep cold. Surround food items with ice and your food will stay cool for a longer period. TRY to limit opening the fridge doors as well to keep it as cool as possible. 2. Charge Cell Phones Charge cell phones before hand. Once cell phones are fully charged, close apps and lower the brightness to conserve battery power. Also, purchase and fully charge any extra batteries and portable chargers for backup energy in case of emergencies. 3. Fill Up Gas Tanks It is important to fill up on gas in all cars to ensure you will be able to travel to any desired safe places. Cars are also another source to change cell phones and another heat source. Gas stations will not be able to operate in case of a bad storm or a bad power outage so it is always a good idea to plan ahead with your car as well! 4. Extra Light Sources This is the time to bring out the extra flashlights ! Keeping a small flashlight in entrances of multiple rooms can ensure you that some light is only a reach away. 5.
